Visual acuity is represented as a fraction, i.e. 20/20. The distance you are able to legibly read the chart from makes up the top part of fraction. The normal legible viewing distance makes up the bottom of fraction. For example, from 20 feet, if you can read the letters on the row marked 40ft, then your vision is blurred at a distance compared to normal sighted persons.  You can be near sighted or far sighted or have astigmatism or be visually impaired from a corneal, lens retina or optic nerve problem.  A visual acuity of 20|40 is 1/2 normal.

A Snellen chart is a great way but outdated way to test visual acuity.  The chart can be on a poster, projected or on a computer monitor.  Our new system is an Eye Chart on your computer.
